I am happy to provide you with an update on goings-on at Arcadia after school closed. Lines were painted in the gym for Coach Simonson's PE classes. Bulging tiles are now being ripped out for replacements to go in. Rooms are being cleaned and carpet washed clean for the new year. The exterior walls and doors are receiving fresh coats of paint. Mrs. Wells is coating the stage floor with wax. Getting ready for a brand-new school year is a lot work but fun!
Developments and changes: Mrs. Breanna Tolman, K-3 Special Educator, took on a new assignment at the district as the Reading Coach in Special Education. She is sorely missed, but the school will have an opportunity to thank her at an assembly in August. Thank you, Ms. Tolman, for giving so much to your students and the school. Thank you!
To take Ms. Tolman's place is Mrs. Karen Nance, who brings 7 years' experience after teaching in Davis School District, a charter school, and local and out-of-state school districts. Mrs. Nance has taught junior high and elementary grades. Meet her in August, together with your students.
Mrs. Joyce Anderson takes over 4-6 Special Educator assignments in the fall, after Mr. Chris Reichert completed a long-term substitute teaching job. Mrs. Anderson will be teaching half-time at Arcadia and taught last at Fox Hills Elem., Granite District.
Mrs. Charlene Pedersen is returning to Arcadia as a half-time Reading Coach; she used to teach here as a Reading Specialist till about 2 years ago.
New with us this year in third grade is Ms. Felicia Harbison, who was teaching fifth grade at Jim Bridger, Granite. She will be Mr. Morse's grade colleague. There will be two classes in third grade again.
Mrs. Jackie Benavides will the third teacher in Grade 2, with Mrs. Norris and Ms. Dee.
As our enrollment continues to dip, we have had to create a fourth/fifth split grade: Mrs. Granger, Mrs. Patterson (4); Mrs. Hommes (4/5 Split); Ms. Prettyman and Ms. McCarrey (5).
Sixth Grade will be taught by Mrs. Jones (Math), Mrs. Park (LA), and Mr. MacLeod (Science & Social Studies).
The main office is closed as construction work continues through July, but please contact the principal by phone or email at 385-646-4758 or [email protected].
I look forward to helping you and new move-ins with registration questions and others. New students will be registered in the first week of August.
Class lists will be posted on the glass front Friday, August 7th.
Would you please make sure your students are reading and getting their basic math facts in over the summer? It matters what they do when school is out. How well students used their time will show on the DIBELS fluency assessments in early September, so I call on parents and our smart students to make time for reading and to brush up on math facts.
I am sorry for a very long update, but you need the information. Thank you, all.
With best regards, Dr. Cecilia Jabakumar, Principal 385-646-4758 [email protected]

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Dear Parents/Patrons,
Day 3 of school and everyone is settling right in. Our students and staff are building sound relationships, expectations, and learning activities to review foundational concepts. We are going places this year with teaching, learning, and doing better. * Close to 30+ families have signed up on the Parent Portal. I realize the website poses log-in issues, but please come over to the school if you can. All forms must be signed off online or in hard copy format. * The Pre-School Program is still accepting applications for 3- and 4-year-olds. The office has a few applications and information available. * Wednesdays and Thursdays are PE days at Arcadia. Recesses are built into the daily schedule. Remind your students to wear sports shoes for recess and PE. Heels, sandals, and flip-flops are not safe choices of footwear. * Lunch applications need to be completed every year. Please fill out an online application on the Parent Portal, or come to the office to hand-fill an application.
Should you have a question or concern, please contact the school at 385-646-4756 or 4758 or by email to [email protected]. Thank you. Dr. Jabakumar, Principal
August 25th, 2014 A resounding thank-you to patrons, students, and school staff for your cooperation during the Open House this morning. Welcome!
I trust you all have positive and productive experiences as we work together for our students. I appreciate the smooth start we all had today, thanks to your efforts.
Please set up the Parent Portal or stop by the office so we can help you set one up. All forms, including School Meals Applications, can be completed online, saving you lots of wait time. Do take advantage, sign up, and sign off on the forms online. Lunch applications must be made every year. Patrons will have a reasonable length of time by which to apply. We would be happy to assist you in setting up a Parent Portal account at school to help anyone needing the support. Let us know how we can help you. Thank you for your support of Arcadia Students & Staff,
With best regards, Dr. Cecilia Jabakumar, Principal Arcadia Elementary
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx July 28, 2014 Happy Monday! Tile installation should be finished this week.
Kindly set up an account on the Parent Portal at www.graniteschools.org to complete sign-offs and permissions online, as of this year. Not having the Internet at home should not an issue. Local libraries or the school can help you with that.
Class lists will go up on the exterior glass panels on Friday, August 8th. Till waxing is completed and approval given, we cannot open our front doors, so bear with the "inconvenience" this year.
School starts Monday, August 25th: 8:35 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. for Grades 1-6. We serve school breakfast at 8:00 in the cafeteria. New students taking school meals will need to apply online; till approval from GSD Food Services arrives, parents are expected to send a cold lunch or pay for a regular school breakfast or lunch.
Kindergartners will be attending individual assessment appointments with their respective teacher the week of Aug 25th. Online Scheduler on the school webpage will go active to let parents sign up a time during school hours. Kindergartners' first day at school is Tuesday, September 2nd. A very cordial welcome to all returning and new students, school staff, PTA, patrons and families. I look forward to having all of you back very soon. Thank you. Best regards, Dr. Cecilia Jabakumar, Principal Arcadia Elementary Tel: 385-646-4758 or [email protected]
July 22, 2014 Tile workers have laid tile by the stage and around the corner northward to the line-up spot by fourth grade. Projected completion should be four days from now; we are eager to get a move on to more work after that. New bathroom sinks and shiny faucets! Nice, clean carpet in the rooms, with more cleaning going on . . . How exciting it is going to be for us all! Please share with new neighbors and non-online friends of the upgrade work in progress. Arcadia can be reached by phone and email still, although all doors are locked temporarily.
Please be sure to set up a Parent Portal account at www.graniteschools.org to access your child's info online. You can fill out school meal forms and first-day information online after August 1st. Several computers will be set aside for patrons without online access. The bus schedule is posted alongside for your use. Let me know how I can help you and your students. Thank you for supporting Arcadia Elementary, Granite District. Best, Dr. Cecilia Jabakumar, Principal 385-646-4758 or ccjabakumar@graniteschools.,org

An update to the school community on renovation work in progress at Arcadia Elementary:
The old tile is gone, while other work is in progress. Patrons may call the school at
385-646-4756 or 4758 for help at anytime or stay informed through FB postings, Gmail messages and Twitter. The renovation project should be completed by August 12th. Access to the building, therefore, is not permitted. I am very sorry for the inconvenience created; however, you will be pleased with newly tiled hallways at Arcadia.
Registration of new students will occur after the building opens. Class lists will go up on the school-front glass on Friday, August 8.
Arcadia is pleased to welcome Ms. Jill Dee, who will be teaching second grade, and Mrs. Nancy Wilson, who is the new Reading Interventionist for Grades 2 & 3. Because of low projected enrollment numbers for the new school year at 492 students, we have had some internal moves for teachers. Second and Third Grades will have two classes each, with Mrs. Norris and Ms. Dee; Mr. Morse and Mrs. Benavides. Ms. Prettyman and Mrs. Patterson move to fifth grade to teach with Mr. MacLeod. Mrs. Park will teach sixth-graders with Mrs. Jones and Mr. Boone. All other educators remain in their current assignments. I appreciate the teaching faculty at Arcadia for their willingness to give their students the best learning and growth opportunities.
Third-Grade classrooms will now be inside the building.
With change being the only constant, I also add that Arcadia bids a fond farewell to Mrs. Shari Harwood, Social Worker, who transfers to Stansbury Elementary this fall. Her announcement arrived after school closed, but she has the gratitude and love of many professionals and students. We are pleased to welcome Mrs. Conce Richmond, who will be taking Mrs. Harwood's place. A very warm welcome to new staff and students joining us, along with all returning staff, students, their families, our PTA and Community Council members.
The theme for next year: Building Tremendous Learners. On the bulletin board in the entrance, you will see the theme taking shape, with a stretch on the "Tree-mendous" illustrated with a humongous tree. Everyone will have an opportunity to expand on the tree concept and ecosystems and other symbols perceived in a simple word. Make it work for you and our community of learners and practitioners. I will send out this message via Gmail and also post it on the school webpage. The school also is on Facebook at www.facebook.com/arcadiaelementary. Stay connected with us.

August 5, 2013 Dear Patrons, This year our theme is "Together Everyone Adds More" or T.E.A.M. Our motto is Helping All To Succeed/H.A.T.S.. Vision and direction: Individuals improving instruction, learning, and attitude from the previous year, given the directives and guidance from state and district leadership. E.g.: I will do better than I did yesterday, last week, or last year in math, language arts, citizenship, team spirit, learning or doing. Members of the school community are invited to wear hats or something purple on Fridays to show school spirit. We love things purple around here. Roadrunners Rule! Come join in the action.
Class lists are going up on the glass panels Friday, August 9th. Open House for all students in K through 6: Tuesday, August 20, 5:00-6:00 p.m.. Please check the class lists and go to your student's new classroom to meet the teacher. Establish means of communication--phone, email, phone conference, etc, and learn about class expectations, new learning, and supplies. The purpose is to set up every student for success in learning and growing smarter and wiser in a community of learners. Please sign up to volunteer time in the classroom. Join the PTA and sign up to do something therein; many positions need filling. Volunteer to add your part to making learning & becoming fun for our students. They need you, as do our educators.
It will take the whole Arcadia El Village--neighborhood, families, business partners, and school personnel--to raise and to prepare our students for their futures. Come and add your two mites (ancient pennies) to difference-making at Arcadia Elementary this year. With so many of us and the innumerable skills, talents and abilities we each have, as patrons, employees and well-wishers, our students will succeed in academics, interpersonal skills, and citizenship. Join the school & the PTA in making awesome things happen for our students! Together, Everyone Adds More!
The first day of school is Wednesday, August 21. School breakfast is at 8:00. The first bell goes at 8:35, followed by the tardy bell at 8:40. Kindergartners attend an assessment by appointment that parents set up on Online Scheduler. Kindergartners complete their assessments through Tuesday, August 27. K students start school on Wednesday, August 28th: a.m. session from 8:35 to 11:40; p.m. from 12:20-3:20. On Fridays & Planning days, K sessions are two hours: 8:35-10:35; 11:10-1:05; Grades 1-6 also get out at 1:05. Regardless of purpose, all patrons/visitors are required to check in at the office, as per Utah Law and Granite School District. Thank you in advance for putting safety first at Arcadia.
For your information: Two third-grade classrooms will be in relocatables and one inside the building. Plans are under way to install automatic doors in the next few months, thereby controlling access to classrooms. The bottom-line is safety for all members of this school community. We also look forward to planting trees and drought-tolerant native shrubs this fall. So the work of sustaining instruction, learning, and good citizenship continues, even as we address needs inside and outside the building. Help us keep our school in mint condition. Report vandalisms immediately to GSD Police at 801-481-7122. Send me an email, also, at [email protected] if you have a question, comment or issue needing resolution.
Come join us on August 20th evening for a brief meeting to ease your student into his or her new classroom, with a new teacher. I wish my school staff, students, PTA, Community Council, business partners and well-wishers an awesome academic year of improving performance at various levels, but most of all for every student, based on subject standard and individual need. It's a high and desirable goal that we can reach, with everyone adding more. With best wishes to all our families and supporters, Best, Dr. Cecilia Jabakumar, Principal, Arcadia Elementary Tel: 385-646-4758 [email protected]
July 3, 2013 Happy Fourth of July, everyone! The first batch of students will be returning from Mill Hollow Camp today, possibly between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m.. Check the Mill Hollow link on the school webpage, or #MillHollow1 on Twitter.
The next group leaves on Monday, July 15th, by 8:00 a.m., so please bring your Mill Hollow attendees with their luggage and necessities at 7:30 a.m.. The group returns Wednesday, July 17th around 3:00 or 3:30 p.m.. For questions or concerns, please email Ms. Shelly Prettyman at [email protected] or Mr. Dan Boone at [email protected]. Packing lists and the map may be accessed from the school website under the Mill Hollow link.
FYI: The office is closed for summer cleaning and preparation. Anyone needing assistance at school may email me at [email protected]. The office opens up on August 1st--8:00 to 4:00. All new admissions and move-ins will be received in August.
I have so appreciated community members using our playground and leaving in good shape. Thank you! However, I notice that huge pieces of rubber matting ripped off the ground around the giant slide. Estimated cost of repairs for the whole area stands at around $15,000. I urge people using our school grounds to use facilities responsibly.
Looking ahead at August, class lists go up on the glass panels on Friday, August 9th. School starts Wednesday, August 21st with breakfast at 8:00 and the first bell at 8:35. It will be good to have everyone back very shortly.
Thank you for being a part of the Arcadia Elementary School Community. With best regards,
Dr. Cecilia Jabakumar, Principal Tel: 385-646-4758 [email protected] #cjabakumar Be 212°
School came to a smooth finish yesterday, thanks to our terrific students, school staff, PTA, and parents. We delight in how wise and mature our students have grown this year. We are proud of you all. Have a fun summer and remember to grow the brain & muscle.
Something to think about: At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils, and with boiling water comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train -- Sam Parker, 212° the extra degree
Example of a 212° approach: A person struggles. You help. A door needs to be opened. You open it.
So, be 212. Start now.
My best to you and your families. Read, practice math facts, write some, and exercise daily. Help out at home and be 212.
