Dear Parents and Families,
Our sympathies go out to the families and the people of Newtown, CT. As
we recoup from this tragic event, I know you will have concerns for your
students' safety at school. Please know that ensuring safety has top
priority at Arcadia Elementarty and is an individual and collective
responsibility.
All doors are locked, except for the main doors. Please, please report
to the office to check out your student/s. Teachers will not release
students to any parent without clearance from the office; therefore, expect
teachers to stop you and to direct you to the office, if you have not done
so. There is no room for offense-taking. I say this because office
staff check student records to verify that only parents or parent-authorized
persons pick up students. Teachers need to be able to do their work in peace and
be worrying about visitors not following standard protocol. Help us keep Arcadia safe!
With that being said, I thank all of you who check in at the office before
keeping your appointments with a teacher/class. Maintaining best practices
makes for peace and orderliness.

Arcadia students completed a great week of doing fun things at school during Red Ribbon Week celebrations. We thank our students and staff for crazy hair day, school colors day, crazy socks day, crazy hat day and PJ day. Thank-yous go to Mrs. Shannon Mower and Mrs. Leslee Petrick for their help with the coloring sheet and chocolate treats to participants.
The weather changed on us, so heat is now on in the building. We thank Custodian Kent Johnson, the fine folks at Bud Mahas and District Maintenance staff for repair work and replacements. We appreciate the outcomes of their team effort.
It's time for Acuity Language Arts Benchmark Tests from October 29th.
Halloween Parade: The traditional Halloween Parade is at 9:00 a.m. for all grades on Wednesday, Oct 31st. All parents and family members are welcome to watch the parade through the gym. Kindergarten classes lead first, with children weaving in and out of rooms, picking up those students. Third-grade waits in the library and joins in. The whole entourage makes its way to fifth grade, sixth, then fourth, and lastly second grade. The parade winds its way through the gym and then returns students to their rooms.
Common-sense rules for the Halloween Parade:
Make October 31st a day of fun during the Parade.
Wear school-appropriate, fun costumes.
Pretend, look-alike swords, guns, and weapons of any kind stay home.
We want to see your happy faces, so leave your masks at home.
Gory make-up is discouraged. Use common sense around kids.
Pets of any kind stay home.
Adults need to abide by our rules when under our roof!
Help our students with homework and daily reading. October through December are critical months to work out difficulties in learning. We are fortunate to have an outstanding group of students this year. They will go far in learning and becoming productive citizens!

It's March now and I have gotten to know our students, staff, and some patrons already.
At mid-year, students are demonstrating reading and math skills by grade level. We celebrate the growth made on the DIBELS (fluency tests), Math Acuity tests, assessments in the classroom, and citizenship.
Roadrunners Rule!: Arcadia launched "Our Time" in second grade this past Wednesday, making enrichment activities possible for students who had shown mastery in a targeted math concept. So while three groups met with educators, second-grade teachers met with small numbers of students in their rooms. The outcome was success for those students who needed the extra learning time! We are proud to learn and adapt Truman Elementary's T-Time to help our students succeed. Way to go!
Following our Superintendent's direction, all educators at Arcadia will have a web presence so our patrons and students can access information and communicate as needed.
Making Arcadia a safe place of learning:
Your help is requested: Please check with your teacher on whether your student applies KYHFOOTY in the classroom and outside. Speak to your children about KYHFOOTY, an acronym for: Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself! It will help our whole school tremendously. Can we count on your support to repeat the importance of personal space?
Please report all incidents to the office. Arcadia is a safe learning place for students, so allow school staff to teach and correct behavior.
